Slug nematodes are a strategic solution crafted to rid your garden of slugs. These nematodes, specially formulated to cover up to 100sqm, offer a potent defence against slugs, safeguarding your plants from irregularly shaped holes in leaves, flowers and fruit. Particularly fond of the leaves of many plants, ripening fruits and vegetables, potentially rendering them inedible in cases of severe infestation.
Slugs pose a year-round threat, with peak egg laying occurring in March-Apr and Sept-Oct. Consistent application of nematodes every six weeks effectively combats slug infestations throughout the growing season.
Pest Appearance: Garden slugs are slimy, elongated creatures with soft bodies, typically ranging in colour from light grey to dark brown or even black. They can measure anywhere from 1 to 10 centimetres in length, depending on the species.
Infestation Indicators: Garden slugs are known to feed on a wide variety of plants in the garden, including vegetables, ornamentals, and fruit crops. They often leave behind a trail of slime as they move and consume foliage, leaving irregularly shaped holes in leaves and sometimes entire seedlings or young plants can be consumed.
Initial Signs: Signs of a slug infestation in the garden include irregular holes in leaves, especially on plants close to the ground. Seedlings and young plants may be completely eaten, leading to stunted growth or death. Additionally, the presence of slime trails on plants and the surrounding soil is a common indicator of slug activity.
Application Tips: If using over plants, water them within 30 minutes of application to wash the nematodes off the leaves and back onto the soil.
Ideal Application Conditions/Soil Temp: Avoid exposing nematodes to freezing or high temperatures. The minimum soil temperature for application is 10 degrees.
Storage Guidelines: Store nematodes promptly after delivery, keeping them in the fridge or below 5 degrees until the expiry date on the package which is usually around 2 weeks.
Use the entire pack. Make a stock solution by emptying the whole packet into 10L of water and stir continuously. Once mixed this solution needs to be used within 4 hours. Take 1L of the stock solution and pour it into a separate bucket, mixing with 9L of water while stirring continuously. Move the 10L solution from the bucket into a watering can. Apply to the soil surface around the plant stems, with one watering can treating approximately 10m2. Repeat until all the stock solution has been used, then water the treated area with the watering can or a hose pipe.
