Chafer beetle larvae attack grass roots. Grass growth slows and yellow patches appear. Most of the damage caused to the lawn is by birds, foxes and badgers digging for the larvae.
How do I know if I have chafers grubs or leatherjackets in my lawn?
Chafers are a C shape, white colour with a very distinct orange head and 6 legs whereas the leatherjackets are more of a grey, brown colour, worm-like and legless.
How do I identify chafer damage to my lawn?
The grass goes yellow in places and is easily pulled up, with little or no root growth.Â
Animals and birds can dig up the lawn searching for the chafer grub
What are Chafer grubs?
Chafer grubs are the larval stage of chafer beetles. The beetles emerge from the lawn, lay their eggs, which hatch into grubs which then feed on the grass roots before burrowing deep back into the ground.Â
They then lie dormant deep in the soil before moving to the surface in the spring to emerge as beetles again.
If the chafer's life cycle is not broken re-infestation occurs and the problem gets progressively worse.
Using nematodes to help control chafer grubs
Nematodes are microscopic, beneficial worms that can be used to control chafer grub populations. Nematodes enter the grubs through natural openings and release bacteria that kill the host within a few days.Â
When do I apply chafer nematodes?
If you have just discovered chafer grubs in your lawn or had a severe infestation in the past, apply to moist lawns during April or May and in August to early October. This is when the young grub larvae are active.
Application in spring may aid control but August to October is the recommended time to apply.Â
Chafer nematode instructions
The nematodes come complete with instructions and can be applied using a watering can or nematode applicator. You just apply to moist soil when the soil temperature is above 10ºC (50ºF) and ensure the soil does not dry out for at least two weeks after applying nematodes.
Note: Nematodes are capable of surviving the odd frost; so, don't worry if the temperature falls after you have applied the nematodes.
