Red Spider Mite Information
Picture shows damage caused by the red spider mite.

The red spider mite feed on leaves causing speckling on soft leaved plants and discolouration on fleshy-leaved plants, ultimately causing leaf drop. They are quite slow-moving and produce a fine silk which can eventually cover the plant. They are normally very pale in colour with two distinct spots on either side of their body, they only go red when they are over-wintering. They feed on virtually all plants under protection, and outdoors soft fruit, soft leaved vegetables (e.g. runner beans) and some ornamentals can be badly damaged. One specific biological control product is available, Phytoseiulus but ladybird and lacewing larvae (see above) will also feed on them.
