The thermometer should be fixed so that it is out of direct heat and sunlight. If the mercury has become separated before, or in use, hold the thermometer at the top and swing it down very quickly at arms length as a clinical thermometer. This gradually forces the particles of mercury together. Any small air bubbles will disappear if the instrument is put in a warm or sunny place for a short while.
